How do you maintain a steam heating system?
We moved into our home a few months ago that, I believe, has a steam heating system. I had a plumber out here for something else and he mentioned that I would need to turn the boiler off, drain water and then add new water about once a month during the winter. I haven't attempted to do anything because I am worried I will do it wrong. I just checked it and noticed that the water in the tube is running low. HELP!! I am looking for detailed steps on what I am doing, please.
In my old house when the sight glass was showing low water there was a valve near it that you turned on to add more water. I had an older system without any automatic topping up.
For general maintenance you can Google up some info. You will have to weed through some of the links to see what applies to your boiler.
Draining the old cruddy water out every now and then and manual topping up is normal on some older units. Some steam escapes in the house - this is good because then your air quality won't be so dry.
In the winter I used to put a tray on the radiator to add a little more moisture to the air - just a personal preference.
